IZ~ The Izzy Story Book 1 Encounters (Audible Audio Edition) Ddwlem Roy Kelly LLC Ddwlem Books Reviews
The this book was very surprising. I got it for my son ages ages 13 and 11 to read. Not only did they enjoy reading it I find myself waiting impatiently for the next installment. It was written very well with good detail. My oldest couldn't put it down.He finished it in 2 days! The tone of writing is like the Percy Jackson seires. It is complex enough to challenge an audience aged 11-18. It was perfect for my boys. If you have pre-teens or teenagers this book series is a great buy!
The story starts off from the perspective of Izzy, an alien cat-lizard kind of hybrid created in a genetic experiment on a distant world. He's created as the aliens are searching for the cure to a plague and searching for a biosphere that can help them. Earth looks like a good candidate. We then jump to Earth of the near past and archaeologists find a mysterious urn and an even more mysterious artifact inside. Most of the story proceeds from this point and details the clues that are uncovered. At the end of the story, we jump to the distant past and hear the story of the artifacts from the people who buried them, which does tie us back to the beginning of the story. In the end, we still have a lot of unanswered questions, but perhaps this is not surprising being book 1. A natural disaster hits Earth near the end that does push my suspension of disbelief a bit, but aside from that and lots of questions still to be answered, I enjoyed the story. The narration quality for the audiobook was excellent.
Would you listen to IZ~ The Izzy Story again? Why?
I would definitely listen to IZ again. It was quirky, fun, entertaining and well done. This audiobook provided some great entertainment.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I don't know who would be my favorite character. I liked them all. I guess Aristotle. This was an overall fun adventure with character introduction and I would be interested in hearing more in the series.
What about Roy Kelly’s performance did you like?
Roy Kelly's performance was amazing. He did a fantastic job with this audiobook. There were other voice actors in the book as well that were credited at the end. I especially liked the woman and wish her name was added to the narration.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened to this audiobook in one sitting. It wasn't too long but if it had been longer, I still would've listened to it all at the same time. Great work!
Any additional comments?
I received this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review.
Scientists from the far off planet Authair are in a race against time. A plague is killing their people and the must find a safe haven to complete their research. Earth looks like a winner. Meanwhile, a group of archaeologists and archaeology students are peeking into ruins and find something unexpected.
The action and humor are a lot of fun in this book. We start off in space with aliens, scientists (mad or otherwise), and Izzy himself (who is like some sort of intelligent cat lizard). There’s this plague and some bad guys and the good guys must flee and continue playing with their glass beakers at the same time. They spot Earth and discuss, determining that it looks like a good place to hide out.
Then we totally switch character lists. Now we get to play with the Earthlings and the pace slows way down. This second half of the story is definitely more about a mystery and building some suspense. An archaeology student’s dog digs something unique up and the professor is consulted. Various shenanigans ensue.
For the most part, this book was fun, combining two of my favorite things – space opera and archaeological mystery. My only criticism is that the book is so cleanly divided in half in location and characters that I felt I was reading 2 separate stories. Plus this book cuts off before the connection between the two is cleanly tied together. So be ready to jump into Book 2!
I received this audiobook from the author (via the Audiobook Blast Newsletter) at no cost in exchange for an honest review.
The Narration The narration, sound effects, and music for this book are excellent. It made the book extra fun to have so many voice actors and sound effects. The music was a nice touch too, never drowning out the dialogue.
I was pleasantly surprised when I began reading The Izzy Story. My usual experience in reading books that are not traditionally published had me expecting something a bit inferior to a work that has gone through the route we generally find in our bookstores.
Perhaps my only criticisms are that the cover art could be a bit showier, and that the book itself could be longer. That might be all it would need to stand with its bigger cousins on the shelves.
The authors do a wonderful job of setting up a story that weaves together three different time periods.
Without giving away any spoilers - they have created likable characters, and an engaging plot. The reader is introduced to Izzy, the creation of the artifact, its discovery in current times, and a long ago legend of its past.
The book actually leaves the reader wanting more. I am partial to science fiction and mysteries and the paranormal genre anyway, and this is a wonderful mix. Quite suitable for any target age group, as either YA or adult - without feeling too tamed down for an adult read.
My thanks to the authors for giving me the opportunity to read and voice my opinion. I certainly await the next book in the series!
I expected something different from what the story was. Disappointing.
