A coming of age story set in the 1960’s about Flora, a scar-faced14-year-old girl in a Chicago slum, who is thrown out of her home by her physically and emotionally abusive mother. Her father, who takes her in, seems to grant her all the freedom she ever dreamed of, but Flora wonders if he cares about her at all when he pressures her to drop out of high school and get a menial job. The tension of the era fills the air white against black, “greasers” against hippies, and anti-war protestors versus the police. The world feels ready to explode. Though Flora feels like a coward, she has one strength she leaps into the magical transformation of Art. She draws fearlessly, paints rainbow walls, writes songs for homework, and makes her own clothes out of old curtains.
Flora’s search for acceptance leads her to the humble yet compelling “Saint” Joe who works in a second hand store, as well as a mysterious, eccentric sage who lives right next door. A friend asks her to attend a civil rights march, which would risk the loss of Flora’s newfound home. Her druggy boyfriend lures her to a party in a condemned building, where she sees how easy it would be to die. Flora feels doomed. The champions of goodness are being struck down, her friends are being drafted to fight in a pointless war, and Flora must dance with the devil- or not.

I truly enjoyed this story. It captures the emotions and thoughts of historically emotional times all while weaving an intriguing and personal story of a young girl. As a Chicagoan, there are relatable moments and locations (Dr. King's march through Marquette Park). But, more than that, we witness the lead character Flora's ability to find little points of happiness through her friends, her art and finally her first love despite parental abuse, issues in school, teenage peer pressure, war protests and much more. When I got to the end, I kept trying to turn the page for more. I would love to see what happened next to these characters. Great job!Product details

Balanced On The Edge edition by Lindia Platt Laurel DiGangi Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is my first e-book, and I carried my Fire to work so I could read at lunch. What a treat! Linda's writing is very engaging; her story is very touching, and as one who may be about the age of the main character (today) I remember, and appreciate the author's perspective of, the events in Chicago in 1968.
This book captures" the spirit of the time" for those who came of age during the tumultuous years of the Vietnam War and the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. It is interesting, well written, and filled with wonderful metaphors. It is also a story in which hope prevails. The artwork is vibrant and interesting.
This poignant coming of age story is not only extremely well told, it is a tribute to the resilience of human beings in very challenging circumstances. But the big bonus here is the collection of illustrations by this gifted author. A unique portfolio of original jewel-like collages by the author makes this book a treasure.
What a fine book. Platt is certainly an excellent story teller - I like the subtle tension of the story, all Flora's ups and downs and the contrasts of the other characters. The ways she feels are especially well told. Best of all these are distinctive characters, I'd like to know more about them, the bad guys as well as the good. Or else about the characters in Platt's next novel, which I'm now looking forward to.
A really well written book with a good story lime that is very inspiring. If you want to read a book about a true struggle read this one
I really enjoyed this book. A story of coming of age in Chicago in the 60's. The the spirit and energy of the time are in every page of this book. I was so inspired by the author's use of original art (collage) that emotionally goes with each chapter. I don't believe I have ever seen this done before and I think it is an excellent combination of media. I am also impressed that the author might have saved an original flier from the 1968 D.N.C. in Chicago.
Like all good writers, Platt sees the little things, and because she does this so well, she does not miss the big things. The book is all about being young at a special time in our nations history, young in Chicago's south side, young with immigrant patents profoundly damaged by World War Two, young and struggling against poverty and prejudice. What a great book this would be for young readers today. Highly recommended.
